Student and Scholarship Opportunities at SAVIR 2027

The SAVIR Annual Conference includes many programs designed to support students and early career professionals.

Discounted Registration Fees: Students receive a substantial discount on conference registration fees, in alignment with SAVIR's mission to support the next generation of injury scholars.

Student Scholarships: These scholarships support student travel to present scientific abstracts at the annual conference with a stipend to offset travel costs.  Any student who submits an abstract to the conference is eligible to apply. Student scholarships are available due to the generous donations of SAVIR members. Thanks to a generous pledge from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education, we are increasing student scholarships from $500 to $750 for the 2027 conference. Apply by October 20, 2026.

Early Career Scholarships: SAVIR offers two early career scholarships, thanks to the generosity of donors. Each  recipient receives $500 and recognition during the conference awards ceremony. Apply by October 20, 2026.

  1. The Sixto and Zenaida Ramirez Immigrant Legacy Award for Early-Career Scholars recognizes early-career researchers — including postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty — who show exceptional promise in advancing the science of injury and violence prevention. The award celebrates individuals whose research demonstrates innovation, rigor, and potential for high impact, particularly projects that foster community engagement and contribute to the health and safety of diverse populations. Work that addresses disparities or supports underserved or minoritized communities is especially encouraged, but applicants conducting research with broader populations are also welcome.
  2. The Xiang-Liu Family Emerging Investigator Award in Violence and Injury Science recognizes emerging investigators advancing rigorous, evidence-driven, and methodologically innovative science in violence and injury prevention. Preference will be given to investigators whose work demonstrates methodological rigor, innovative research design, strong quantitative and/or mixed-methods approaches, rigorous causal inference or community-engaged research methods and indicates high potential to advance the science of violence and injury prevention.

Student Plenary Speaker: Each year, the Student and Early Career Professionals committee at SAVIR invites applications for a student plenary speaker at the conference. This is a great opportunity to share your research interests and personal story with the SAVIR community. Individuals can indicate interest when submitting an abstract. Apply by October 20, 2026.

Student Paper Prize: Students who submit an abstract to the SAVIR conference have an opportunity to submit a paper for review and scoring. The top scored paper is awarded the Student Paper Prize at the annual conference.

Mentorship Program: SAVIR Members can apply to participate in our annual 1:1 mentorship program. Learn more about SAVIR's mentorship programApply by October 20, 2026.

Awards for Best Student Presentations: The winners of these awards are selected at the conference from the oral and poster sessions presented, and recognize the best scientific presentations by students or early career professionals.

Mentor Mingle Session: This mentoring session takes place at the annual conference and is open to all students and early career professionals in attendance. Indicate interest in participating when you register.
